TikTok Updates Family Pairing Feature - Helping Parents Promote Better Digital Habits For Their Teens!

Writer: Christopher ChuahChristopher Chuah

TikTok, the leading platform for short-form videos, has introduced new features to improve family safety and support teens in maintaining healthy digital habits. Parents and caregivers can now manage over 15 safety, well-being, and privacy settings through the app.

Originally launched in 2020, the Family Pairing feature enables parents to link their accounts with their teens for better oversight. The latest updates build on existing tools like screen time limits and privacy controls, incorporating feedback from families and experts.

TikTok has introduced new parental control features to promote healthier screen habits for teens. The Time Away feature allows caregivers to block access during specific times like family meals, school hours, or bedtime. Parents can set recurring schedules and grant extra time using a passcode. This builds on TikTok’s default 60-minute daily screen time limit for users under 18, which can be adjusted by a parent or guardian.

Additionally, parents can now view their teen’s followers, who they follow, and blocked accounts, improving oversight of their social interactions.

To encourage better sleep habits, TikTok has launched a wind-down feature for users under 16. If a teen stays active past 10 p.m., their For You feed will be interrupted by full-screen reminders with calming music and prompts that become harder to dismiss, nudging them to log off.

TikTok continues to promote mindful screen habits with new features aimed at improving teen well-being. Future updates will include guided meditation exercises for relaxation and sleep, complementing the platform’s existing restriction on nighttime push notifications to reduce digital distractions.

Additionally, parents can now re-enable the STEM feed if their teen has turned it off. Launched in the U.S. and Europe last year, this dedicated Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math feed provides educational content and has grown to over 10 million videos globally. Now available in 100+ countries, it continues to expand with localized content, inspiring teens in subjects like geology and ancient history.

These updates reinforce TikTok’s commitment to online safety and digital well-being. By enhancing Family Pairing and Teen Safety features with input from parents, guardians, and experts, the platform aims to create a safer and more positive experience for young users.
