Review: Galaxy S24 FE - The Most Affordable Full Galaxy AI Experience

Everyone thought Samsung is going to skip the Fan Edition again this year, like how they did for the Galaxy S22. Just when everyone’s eyes are on the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S25 series, Samsung surprised us with its newest addition to the Samsung S24 series. Meet the Galaxy S24 FE, and for this newest Fan Edition device, Samsung is bringing to you the most affordable full Galaxy AI experience. If you’ve been on the fence ever since Galaxy AI came out early this year, the Samsung Galaxy S24 FE might finally help you take a side. So let's take a look at what the S24 FE has to offer.

▲Samsung Galaxy S24 FE

Design

The Galaxy S24 FE continues to feature a premium design with glass at both the front and back but this time it is shielded with the upgraded Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus®+. The durability is enhanced by the aluminium frame, which is now flattened and it certainly feels more comfortable in the hand compared to the curved design on the previous generation. Besides, the S24 FE is also rated IP68 for dust and water resistance, which further improves the durability of the phone.

The S24 FE has a dimension of 162 x 77.3 x 8 mm and weighs 213g, making it bigger and heavier than both the sibling model S24+ and the predecessor S23 FE. However, I’m somehow surprised that the S24 FE feels a little bit lighter in the hand compared to the S23 FE, which further improves the overall operating experience especially in one hand.

The S24 FE comes in 4 colour variants, namely Graphite, Gray, Blue and Mint. Users who prefer minimalism can opt for the Graphite or Gray, and if you prefer a sense of youth while maintaining the calm and soothing feeling, the Blue or Mint colour would make a perfect choice.

▲Dimensionally bigger and heavier but it feels more comfortable in the hand than S23 FE

The S24 FE camera module looks exactly the same as the S23 FE with three individual cutouts for the lenses. As usual, I would still consider this a pain point as the fact it is protruding too much would somehow make them prone to damages, especially when you’re going to lay the phone on the table or any other surface for at least several times a day. The glass back also attracts fingerprints and smudges quite easily, making it require regular cleaning. Though the above two issues could be easily settled with a phone casing but still it could be a setback for users who prefer original open design.

Display

The S24 FE features a 6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x display with an adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, giving you the flagship model visual experience.  The peak brightness of 1900 nits is a huge improvement from the S23 FE’s 1450 nits, albeit it is a bit far off the flagship models’ 2600 nits. Regardless, the difference should not pose too much of an inconvenience, as it would be sufficient for outdoor viewing under the bright sunlight.

▲6.7-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2x with 19% sillmer bezels

The bezels are still quite noticeable, but they are now 19% slimmer than the previous model, and together with a larger display, the viewing experience has improved significantly. With the display quality on par with the premium flagship models, I definitely couldn’t ask for more. Be it for movies or gaming, you would definitely be satisfied with its brighter and more colourful than ever display.

Camera

The S24 FE features a 50MP primary lens, a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and an 8MP telephoto lens equipped with 3x optical zoom, nearly identical to the S23 FE. The only difference from the flagship models is the telephoto lens, which is 10MP on the S23 and S23+ so overall picture quality would still be as good as the flagship models. The front selfie camera is a 10MP wide lens camera, not to say best in quality but would be far more than enough for some selfies and video calls. The entire camera system is powered by The ProVisual Engine which features a comprehensive suite of AI-powered tools to help enhance your shots with sharp details and rich texture

▲50MP main + 12MP ultra-wide + 8MP telephoto

Picture quality is quite impressive across various lighting conditions, delivering high level details and accurate colour whether in bright daylight or indoor lighting. By default, the camera operates in 12MP mode, which is ideal for most casual shots and balanced in terms of storage use and image quality, but for those wanting maximum detail, you'll need to switch to 50MP manually for  even more detailed and vibrant shots.

▲High level details and vibrant colours across various lighting situation

The ultra-wide camera also performs equally well, maintaining good colour consistency across the frame, with minimal distortion around the edges. It’s especially useful for wider landscape shots or group photos, offering a wide field of view without compromising on quality.

▲Ultra Wide mode

The Nightography feature helps to ensure smooth and stable performance even in low-light environments. The camera automatically activates Night mode when it detects low ambient light, allowing you to focus on capturing the moment without manually adjusting the settings. Under some lighting scenario you would still need to manually activate Night mode if you want to capture details in the darker zone but overall the performance is still above expectations.

The telephoto lens performs well, retaining much of the image quality even at higher zoom levels with minimal loss of sharpness or detail, thanks to the advanced NPU and GPU powering the 8MP telephoto lens. It excels particularly during daytime, delivering clearer and more vibrant images, though in low-light settings, some noise and softness can be expected, but everyday use, it would be sufficient to capture distant subjects without significant degradation in quality.

Performance

The S24 FE is powered by Samsung’s in-house Exynos 2400e chipset, which is currently exclusive to this device. Paired with the Xclipse 940 GPU, the S24 FE supports advanced features like ray tracing, ensuring it’s more than capable of handling even the most demanding mobile games with ease. While ray tracing is not yet widely available in many mobile games, this feature makes the device future-proof for upcoming titles that will take advantage of this cutting-edge technology.

In terms of memory, the S24 FE comes with 8 GB of RAM, offering smooth multitasking and efficient performance across apps and games. Storage options include 256GB and 512GB ROM models, providing ample space for apps, media, and large game files.

Honor of Kings at Max FPS Ultra Resolution and HD Graphics ran at a stable 120FPS without any noticeable lag throughout the one hour session, and the highest temperature hit was 39°C. The more graphically demanding Forsaken World 2 at Ultra Graphics has the FPS capped at 30 so overall gameplay is still smooth but some lag could be noticeable once the temperature hits high at 42°C especially during the loading scenes which is quite frequent in an open-world MMORPG. The heat is quite noticeable as you can easily feel the warmth at the back due to the glass material, but thanks to the improved vapour chamber which is 11% larger than the S23 FE, the device cools down pretty fast as well.

One thing that I love the most is the Game Booster, which not only act as a quick access to various game related settings, but also learns your usage patterns for every game you play. It will then utilise this data to optimise the game to achieve the best balance of battery life, performance and temperature. You can also choose to turn on "Auto Manage Performance "to let the system automatically reduce audio volume and video frame rate when the phone's temperature gets too high and close background apps when memory is low, which in turn help to maintain the game performance.

Asides from that, the S24 FE also comes equipped with Samsung Knox, offering robust security features that safeguard your personal data and privacy. You can also enjoy peace of mind for future updates as Samsung promises 7 years of security upgrade and 7 generations of OS upgrades, which means that your device will be receiving future Galaxy Ai upgrades as well.

Galaxy AI

The S24 FE offers 100% of the same Galaxy AI features as the flagship S24 lineup, bringing you the complete Galaxy AI experience from creative photo enhancements and real-time language translation to efficient note organisation and smart device management without breaking the bank. We previously did quite a few writeups regarding the useful Galaxy AI features and here are some of them.

▲Full Galaxy AI Experience

With cool features like Generative Edit, you can get super creative with your photos like never before. This tool lets you easily move, resize, or even remove unwanted stuff in your pics with just a few taps, giving you all the freedom to play around. Edit Suggestions make photo editing a breeze, helping you quickly fix things like reflections or blemishes. And if you want to make those special moments last, Instant Slow Mo turns everything into stunning slow motion videos, including those not originally shot that way or downloads. Plus, Portrait Studio takes your selfies and turns them into amazing works of art, letting AI work its magic on your self-portraits.

▲Portrait Studio

When it comes to chatting, the S24 FE really shines with its Live Translate feature. You get real-time voice translation during calls across various apps, so connecting with others becomes super smooth, no matter what language they speak. And for face-to-face conversations, the Interpreter function kicks in and instantly translates, and the best part is all these happen on device directly even if you're offline. This means you can chat with anyone, anywhere, without any worries. These features make communication way easier, letting you engage with the world around you without worrying about language barriers.

▲Intepreter

On the productivity side, there are tools like Chat Assist that refines your messages, ensuring they have the right tone and grammar, or even translate into your desired language, while Note Assist simplifies note-taking with seamless formatting and translation. If you find yourself in need of quick information, Browsing Assist helps you summarise or translate entire web pages effortlessly. And don’t forget about Circle to Search with Google, which lets you find answers and discover new things by just drawing a circle around what you’re curious about, making exploring and finding information super easy.

Battery

The S24 FE is equipped with a sizable 4700mAh battery, which comfortably lasts through a full day of typical use. This includes basic tasks like browsing social media, checking emails, and handling notifications, along with more moderate activities such as snapping photos, watching videos, and some light gaming.

Gaming tends to drain the battery more quickly, especially on higher graphics settings, whereas video streaming is more moderate. A 3 hour 20 minutes long session of intensive usage drains around 60% of the battery, with the MMORPG game Forsaken World 2 consuming the majority of power due to its Ultra graphic settings, so you might need to slightly tune down on the graphic settings to ensure a longer up time. Breakdown of power consumption tabulated below:

The S24 FE supports 25W wired charging and 15W wireless charging, but the charging speed would be considered on the slower side compared to competitors offering fast charging technologies. That said, the large battery capacity balances this out, providing ample power throughout the day, so you won’t find yourself scrambling for a charger too often, ensuring that even after a full day of moderate use, you'll still have some juice left to get you through the evening.

Since the S24 FE does not come with a charger,  I tested using a 100W super fast charger which does trigger the ultra fast charging on the phone. Actual charging test takes around 15 minutes to restore the battery from 1% to 26%, 30 minutes to 46% and 1 hour 27 minutes to 100%. The charging speed slows down quite obviously once it passed the 90% mark and took way longer to reach 100%. And in case you didn't know yet, charging to 100% all the time would cause battery degradation in the long run due to more strain being put on the battery. That said, you would definitely be good to go with an hour of charging as it is the time needed to reach roughly 80%-90% of battery.

▲Start from 1%, 15 minutes to 26%, 30 minutes to 46%, 1 hour 27 minutes to full

Verdict

With a starting price of RM3299, this is the most affordable device for you to step into the Galaxy AI universe. Despite the adjustments Samsung made to keep the price point accessible, the S24 FE still packs many features that are comparable to its premium sibling models, with some even matching its flagship counterparts.  From its impressive camera capabilities to solid performance and durability, the S24 FE offers a well-rounded experience that caters to both casual users and tech enthusiasts alike. Furthermore, Samsung’s commitment to security and software longevity makes the S24 FE a reliable choice for those looking to invest in a device that prioritises both protection and performance. If you're looking to experience Galaxy AI without breaking the bank, I would recommend the Galaxy S24 FE, as it would definitely deliver exceptional value for your money.
