Illegear Wants To Challenge Desktops With Its New Ares X Laptop

Illegear has launched the Ares X, a new gaming laptop that touts itself as an “extreme desktop replacement”.

The intriguing thing about the Ares X is its modular CPU. Consumers will get a bunch of Intel processor options ranging from the i5-10400 to i9-10900K. The modular design means that upgrading your CPU will be a piece of cake, although you’ll presumably have to let the Illegear staff do the hands-on stuff. Similarly, the Ares X’s RAM is also upgradable, topping out at 128GB.

As for the GPU, you’ll get to choose between the RTX 2070 8GB, RTX 2070 SUPER 8GB, or RTX 2080 SUPER 8GB. They’ll apparently be overclockable too, in case you wanted more power out of your graphics card. The press release’s headline implies that the Ares X’s GPU is also modular, but since the contents only elaborate on the CPU, we’ll assume that the GPU isn’t similarly swappable for now. Storage-wise, you can install up to 4 M.2 SSDs, with a total capacity of 8TB.

Below are the Ares X specs and starting prices Illegear has provided in their press release. You’ll be paying nearly RM10,000 at the very least, and customizing your laptop on Illegear’s online store will certainly increase that figure.

Pre-orders for the Ares X are available from 18 August to 31 August 2020. Pre-ordering now will net you freebies in the form of a 1TB Samsung NVMe SSD upgrade, Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut, professional colour calibration, and a Tusk gaming mouse, which are apparently worth over RM800.
