ASUS has released firmware updates to enable the Resizable BAR feature for over 180 of its desktop motherboards, including various A520, B550, Z490 and H410 motherboard variants. The company also said that it is bringing Resizable BAR support to its RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, RTX 3080, and RTX 3090 GPUs via video BIOS updates.
ASUS’ RTX 3060 GPUs, along with all RTX 3060s in general, don’t require any update to make use of Resizable BAR.
Resizable BAR basically makes use of PCIe to create increased performance for certain games, which include Assassin's Creed Valhalla, Cyberpunk 2077, Hitman 3, and Watch Dogs Legion. There are currently 17 games in total that can make use of the feature.
“Resizable BAR is an optional PCI Express interface technology. As you move through a world in a game, GPU memory (VRAM) constantly transfers textures, shaders and geometry via many small CPU to GPU transfers,” explained NVIDIA in a blog post.
“With the ever-growing size of modern game assets, this results in a lot of transfers. Using Resizable BAR, assets can instead be requested as-needed and sent in full, so the CPU can efficiently access the entire frame buffer. And if multiple requests are made, transfers can occur concurrently, rather than queuing.”
For desktops, the feature requires “a GeForce RTX 30 Series graphics card with a supported VBIOS, a compatible CPU, compatible motherboard, motherboard SBIOS update”, and the latest GeForce Game Ready driver. For laptops, support for the feature depends on the specific model.
ASUS users can head over to its Download Center to seek out the updates needed, while the instructions on how to activate Resizable BAR with ASUS motherboards are here.
